New Cancer Hospital Design

News Summary

The Medical University of South Carolina has revealed plans to construct a state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer hospital in Charleston. The facility, the first of its kind in South Carolina, aims to consolidate cancer treatment services, improving patient care and accessibility. With an estimated 33,000 new cancer diagnoses each year in the state, this project is set to enhance cancer care services significantly. Supported by state funding, construction is expected to start in the coming years with plans for completion by 2030.

Charleston, South Carolina – The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has announced plans to build a state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer hospital in Charleston, representing a significant step forward in cancer care within the state. This facility will be the first of its kind dedicated exclusively to cancer treatment in South Carolina.

The hospital will be constructed on a site located between Ashley Avenue and Sabin Street, where the Rutledge Tower annex, energy plant, and current ground parking exist. The project’s construction has received approval from MUSC’s board of trustees, paving the way for a facility that will expand access to advanced cancer services.

The comprehensive cancer hospital aims to address the high burden of cancer in South Carolina, where an estimated 33,000 new cancer diagnoses occur each year, leading to approximately 11,000 cancer-related deaths annually. This new facility is crucial for improving patient experience and accessibility, consolidating various cancer services that are currently spread across multiple locations into one centralized facility.

In its comprehensive service offerings, the new hospital will provide both inpatient and outpatient care, including surgeries, stem cell transplantation, chemotherapy and infusion services, radiation therapy, and participation in clinical trials. This will allow for a more integrated and streamlined approach to treatment for patients battling cancer.

To support the development, the state legislature has allocated an additional $5 million to the project, increasing the total state contribution to $15 million. Construction for the hospital is expected to begin within the next 1.5 to 2 years, with completion projected by 2030. The facility will feature 50-100 inpatient beds, further enhancing MUSC’s capability to provide specialized cancer care.

The initiative also aims to boost MUSC’s ability to attract and retain leading oncology clinicians, while enhancing its research capabilities. Achieving National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center designation is a key goal for the new hospital, aiming to elevate cancer research and treatment standards within the region.

In addition to the new cancer hospital, MUSC’s board has approved the construction of a medical office building at 334 Calhoun St., which will replace services currently provided in the aging Rutledge Tower. The Calhoun Street facility will house primary care and specialty outpatient clinics, operating rooms, and ancillary services, and is anticipated to be completed by 2028.

This development is seen as part of a broader strategy to increase the availability of clinical trials and expand community outreach efforts throughout South Carolina. The establishment of new cancer centers in regions such as Florence and Orangeburg is also being planned to provide better access to care for residents across the state.

The anticipated economic impact of the new hospital is expected to be significant, creating jobs and stimulating the local economy, in addition to improving healthcare offerings. Overall, MUSC’s plans for the new comprehensive cancer hospital reflect an important commitment to enhance cancer care and address the needs of patients facing this devastating disease in South Carolina.
